Setting up a Windows Live ID – Get Started with Windows Live

In order to make use of all of the Windows Live services such as the Windows Live site and the desktop applications, you will need to set up a Live ID. You can choose to set up a new one using either a Hotmail account or a Live account, or you can choose to set up your present email address as a Live ID if you prefer. This can be a Yahoo account, a Gmail account, an AOL account or one that you have set up with your internet service provider. So, lets get started.

1. Go to http://live.com and click on the Sign Up button.

signup-page 2. Now, type in your name into the first textbox next to Windows Live ID. This can be your real name or nickname, depending on which do you prefer. You may also be offered another choice of email when you click on the small black down arrow. Then click on Check availability to check if your desired name is available or not.

3. Next, you have to create a password for your Live ID account. It is recommended to use combination of both alphabets and numbers. As you type your password, you will be informed of the strength of your password, the stronger the better. Then re-type the chosen password just to make sure your choice of password entered above and you can remember it.

4. Next, you are required to provide an alternate email address. This email will be used to send a ‘password reset’ email just incase you forgotten your password in the future. If you doesn’t have another email, you can choose to set up a security question instead. This is to ensure that you are the rightful owner of this Live ID account.

5. Next, you will need to enter some of your personal details, such as your first and last name, country you are living in and the area, zip code, gender, and birthday.

6. Last but not least, and purely for security reasons in order to make sure that you are a human and not a spamming bot, you need to fill in the box below the grey one the exact same letters and numbers that they grey ‘Capcha’ box contains. TIP. If you have difficulty with this and keep getting it wrong, then click on the loudspeaker icon and the letters and numbers will be spoken to you.

7. Now, click "I accept” at the bottom of the page to complete your new Windows Live ID registration. You will be then brought to your new Windows Live homepage.
